Description
No Cretan household was complete without a jar or two on hand, ready for guests, a way of keeping summer’s fruit close all winter long.
The recipes are Marina’s, Stavros’s mother, who spent countless hours reworking them into something lighter than the traditional, sugar-heavy versions still common across Crete. Her sour cherry and bergamot spoon sweets have gone on to win international recognition, a rare achievement for something this humble.
Resourceful ways to enjoy them like a Greek
For as long as anyone can remember, welcoming a guest in Crete has meant offering a spoon sweet on a small plate, alongside a Greek coffee or a small glass of raki and a glass of cold water, one spoonful at a time.
But they’re just as good stirred into Greek yogurt, paired with ice cream (sour cherry with vanilla is a favorite), or worked into muffins, pancakes, and cakes, sour cherry finding a natural home in a Black Forest gâteau.
Our spoon sweets are uniquely delicious. Ask any Cretan νοικοκυρά (housewife) you meet!
