OUR STORY

The story of Kokkiadis Honeybee farm began over 14 years ago on the island of Crete in Greece. With love for nature and passion for beekeeping we produce Cretan honey, beeswax, bee pollen and propolis without being processed by sugar, antibiotics, pesticides and insecticides. We also are connected with the history of Minoan Crete as our bees feed exclusively on the rich flowers and Cretan herbs that are found only on the island of Crete and specifically in Selakanos forest, which is located in the mountains of Lassithi region and in the surroundings of Athanati village in Heraklion region of Crete, Greece. Also our honey is organic and distinguished for its high-quality and sugar free composition without being processed by antibiotics and pesticides.

HONEY IN MINOAN TIMES

Beekeeping in Crete was based on ancient traditions for hundreds of years. Cretans used different materials to build the hives: clay and wicker for hives with movable combs, and sometimes wooden boards. Although the Cretans knowledge about bees was limited at the time, the beekeeping methods can be regarded as sophisticated.

Honey was consumed in Crete since Minoan times. The Minoans used honey to produce mead and probably as a sweetener in certain dishes. The bees held an essential role in Minoan culture and religious practices, as the discovery of a Minoan honeybee pendant dating from the Middle Bronze Age (1800-1600BC) in Chrysolakkos – the ancient necropolis of Malia – suggests.

The importance of Cretan honey was documented by ancient philosophers like the Roman Pliny the Elder and the Greek botanist Pedanius Dioscorides among others. Greek papyri discovered in Egypt document the quality of the Cretan honey too. Egypt remained a strong trading partner for the Minoans. They traded wines, wheat, honey, timber and other food items in exchange for papyrus, copper and ivory.
